20th Anniversary SAE sets

Been watching E-Bay and the 20th Anniversary Silver American Eagle sets are now selling for $410-440 each. Now I need the advice of the numistatic experts here. Is now the time to sell off the extra sets? I'm keeping one set back for myself.

Also, 2006-W uncirculated SAE's are nearing $100 each. Opinions?

Just looking for some :albertein opinions and expert advice.

I am keeping one of each, including and NGC 69 2006-W I picked up right after the mint started shipping :bear_cool: .

I'm no expert, but my gut says to hang tight longer. I sold 2 sets immediately, and still have 3. I was probably going to hang onto these for a while too.

I would wait till next year, word has yet gotten out to all collectors, these will be going for over a thousand bucks by years end, I have seen the pcgs sets in ms69 and pf69 well over 500 bucks already. Dont forget this was a mint error that they only made 250k sets and less than 250k of the uncirculated w2006. Compare these to the 1996 with almost 4million minted and they go for 120+ in ms69. Hold and you will do much better, I have many sets myself.

Re: 20th Anniversary SAE sets

I wouldn't even be tinking about selling them (unless I seriously needed the funds)..........you think they are worth something now?

Check back in 5 years!! :D

The longer you hold them the more they will be worth - there are only 250,000 sets, there are 3.5 million people in CA alone.....and while not all CA's are collectors, it gives you an idea how few of those sets there are!!!

And there are more and more coin collectors starting each day.........

So there are not enough sets for even half of all the colectors out there.

And those sets sold for $100 some 7-8 months back?

Yep, hold on to them as long and as hard as you can cause I suspect, in a year, the price will go up again!!

How does one get an uncirculated w2006 except by owning the SAE 20th set? You reference the 1996 uncirc as low mintage and has quite a premium. However, I see a difference between the uncirc 2006 and the uncirc w2006. I have the red book and I am confused because, I think like you are saying, it says "in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Bullion Coin Program in 2006 the W mint mark was used on all bullion coins produced except the Reverse. I am looking at a 2006 uncirc SAE and it does not have a W mint mark. Something doesn't make sense, the Red book (2008) must be wrong. I can see there only being 250k of the uncirc w2006 because that is how many 20th sets they made and should have greater value but there are who knows how many regular uncirc 2006 bullion coins (given the last three years, I expect about 8.5 million) that will not be rare.

Actually, there are over 35 million people in California. I believe the average population of the 405 Freeway is about 3.5 million at any given time (more during rush hour).

Re: 20th Anniversary SAE sets

Well based on the US Mint's site, it appears the Red Book is incorrect. There was a special uncirculated version of the 'regular' bullion coin made w/ a W mint mark. I did not know this. Can someone post a pic of the uncirc w2006 with its packaging (pouch, plastic cover, CoA). TIA

This is from the Mint's web site:

2006 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated One Ounce Coin (Z6F)

2006 marks the inaugural year of the American Eagle Silver Uncirculated Coin Program. Struck on specially burnished blanks, this coin offers silver precious metal purchasers a new collectible version of the popular American Eagle Silver Bullion Coin and features a finish similar to its bullion coin counterpart. Each coin also bears the W mint mark reflecting its striking at the United States Mint at West Point.

The artisans of the United States Mint have captured the grace and elegance of sculptor/engraver Adolph A. Weinmans celebrated Walking Liberty design.

The obverse design features an ever hopeful Liberty striding confidently toward the sunrise, draped in the strength of the Stars and Stripes carrying in her arms branches of laurel and oak to symbolize both civil and military glory.

The reverse design, by United States Mint sculptor John Mercanti, features a striking heraldic eagle with shield, and olive branch in the right talon and arrows in the left. The 2006 American Eagle Silver Uncirculated One Ounce Coin is encapsulated in plastic, inserted into a pouch, placed in a protective outer box, and accompanied with a custom-designed Certificate of Authenticity.

Price: $19.95

The uncirculated SAE with the W mint mark. According to the Mint - there were 250,000 sold in the 20th Anniversary set, 209,000 sold individually minted figure and 11,000 sold with the gold Eagle. That would push the total to 480,000 minted, which makes it one of the rarest SAEs. So, still much less than any of the other uncirculated coins (the previous lowest was the 1996 with 3.6 million). These are relatively stable, going for between $65-$80 on Ebay, no matter if they are slabbed or what company slabbed them or what grade they received (and what set they are from). They are the next rarest of the 2006 SAEs, after the reverse proof.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>

Blasted, foiled again:mad_m: . Thought the Proof was going to be the rarest after the Reverse. Looks like it might be this uncirc w2006.

That IS correct...

But there really are no losers........depending on how you bought the set and for how much.........

Right now PCGS (which is an inflated retail price guide, so knock a little off) has MS 69 versions of those coins, which most coins are.......

20th Silver Eagle - Uncirculated MS 69 $ 135<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
20th Silver Eagle - Proof PR 69 DCAM $ 105<o:p></o:p>
20th Silver Eagle - Reverse Proof RevPr 69 $ 300

If you bought the set for $100, you paid $33 for the coin - you are ahead.........if you bought the individual coin, I would think it would STILL be worth more than when you bought it.......and in time it will still go up higher.

Re: 20th Anniversary SAE sets

Why oh why did I not have the foresight to buy 10 of these sets?
Still, with the problems the mint was having filling their orders, I'm happy I got my two. Almost tempted to pick up one or two more even at current prices! Dollar-cost-averaging, ya know.....:applause_

I posted pics of the set back in this thread.

I was changing the channels on the cable tv recently and switched to the home shopping network. They were selling the set in ICG 69 holders for $700 :shocked_ma:

Thanks RacingGal,

I did see a few ebay auctions for the uncirc but most were at $80 and above already. One guy was selling 20 of them for $2500.:boxing:

There are still some available out there for less than $70, if you know where to look and get lucky! Here's one I bought over the weekend: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...8586&rd=1&rd=1

I am already making money on that purchase - buy one and then go right ahead and sell one for more: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...2666&rd=1&rd=1

Not that I have seen. I missed the boat on this one. I was supposed to get a set for Christmas, so I did not order. Ooops. :mad_m:

I will enjoy the profits made by my fellow GIMers. Can't catch every boat.

At these prices, I will not buy, even though I suspect they will grow in value even more so.

Nice snag on that first one. That seller didn't seem to know what they were doing from the listing title.

Edit...Speaking of low mintages....Is anyone aware that the 1997 Silver Maples minatge is 100,970. Currently going between $30-$40..
